The Schroeder Institute is a multidisciplinary research organization focused on high-risk, high-reward research to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use in the United States. Supported by the American Legacy Foundation, the Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies will provide the needed research infrastructure to help facilitate the conduct of rigorous tobacco-related research. A major focus of research conducted at the Institute is to leverage the enormous power of technology-based interventions to deliver evidence-based smoking cessation interventions to large populations, targeting both traditional web as well as newer social networks and mobile applications. As an innovative research group the Schroeder Institute is devoted to developing the next generation of technology-based interventions to help people quit smoking and stay quit.
The Senior Software Engineer will join a proven team with a range of experiences across industry, research, and public health as we design, build, and deploy novel approaches to curbing tobacco use.
The Senior Software Engineer will help in reshaping of how the treatment of substance abuse is conceptualized and delivered, with an emphasis on online social networks, text messaging and mobile applications.
- Work as part of a small development group to build, test and deploy several overlapping product lines, including social network applications, a large-scale text messaging campaign and others.
- Participate in the entire development lifecycle, from product strategy through operational support.
- Contribute to building high-quality, reliable software used by hundreds of thousands of people
The ideal candidate should have a bachelors' degree with a minimum of 5 years in developing successful consumer-focused web applications. Have proven experience in developing applications with open source technologies, preferably Python/Django as well as MySQL or PostgreSQL. This candidate should be experienced and comfortable with metric and test-driven development, and have the ability to work in a collaborative team environment and juggle multiple priorities. Candidates with a Masters' degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics is preferred. Experience with front-end development such as: jQuery, Ajax, DHTML, HTML5 etc., and with Facebook's Graph API and/or text messaging systems is also a plus.
